2007/2008
The South African Young Horse Performance Series enters its fourth competitive year in 2009.This series has grown from being the ‘dream’ of two enthusiastic riders (who both have bred foals from mares they competed in the Open classes – hence they became breeders) and a steady financial whiz (a dedicated mom who has two very determined and competitive daughters) to the richest series on the Showjumping calendar in South Africa.
Mix with this wonderful friends and acquaintances who continue to support and encourage with fantastic trophies and help whenever needed. We were very fortunate that both HSB Investments and InvestChem Chemical Logistics made huge financial contributions giving the winners a rather hefty purse. We also have a sponsored jump – the red & white Media Colada panel. It is hoped that a complete set of jumping equipment will eventually be owned by the Young Horse Performance Series.
Equifox Veterinary Supplies has sponsored veterinary gifts, and Glenfox Stud and Pretoria Equestrian Centre have organized and sponsored all the qualifying legs.
A number of venues have expressed an interest in hosting one of the legs, an exciting prospect as in this way we would be able to ‘up the game’ and each leg could become a showcase on its own.
HQ magazine, the Warmblood Horse Society and many of our South African Stud farms encourage the promotion and recognition of the Sport Horse and this series fulfills that criteria. The 2008 SA Avis Derby Warrangal P is a locally bred Warmblood!
We envisage participation from the Namibian Warmblood Society, in the form of identifying the best Namibian bred 5, 6 and 7yr old.in 2009. The Eastern Cape breeders have expressed an interest in running the series and sending their winners to the final leg.
The GHS Horse Society very kindly agreed to the presentation of the trophies at their flagship show, the SA Avis Derby. Television coverage has been discussed and is certainly a possibility in the near future.
All the current officials are leaders in their respective fields:
Course designers Eric Bianchi, Fanie vd Merwe, Greg Scott and Barry Taylor need no introduction. They have many years experience in getting the best out of horse and rider.
Potential show jumper judges: Tony Lewis, David Stubbs, Keith Turner, Ernie & Jonne Davenport, Claire Webb, Dominey Alexander, Rogan Asken, Chad Cunningham, Damian Stevens, Dion Boardman, Nicole Horwood, Anneli Wucherpfennig, Gail Foxcroft and Sue vd Merwe have all been involved either competitively or in an official capacity and are also respected members of the equestrian fraternity.
As we approach 2009, we encourage all owners of 5,6 and 7yr old equine athletes to enter and compete with the best SA has to offer.
