Members riding on others backs!

Whats in a name?
What I as a non-breeding, non SAWHS member, IE general member of the public, find so disappointing about the warm blood fraternity is their lack of loyalty and integrity to their breeders and members. Just because a breeder / member has imported / purchased a brilliant horse does not mean that they can prefix it with their stud name and thus imply that they have bred it. This form of stolen identity does not only happen in South Africa, it happens in Europe as well. A prime candidate for this activity is the well renowned Zangerhiede stud which will add their Z suffix to purchased horses. A well known example is Ramiro (Z)?

The ABC of all breeding

The Mare Line
The thoroughbred race horse buyers realised this a long time ago. That is why the progeny of black type mares are so sought after and why their prices are so much higher than the non black types, even from the same stallion. In other words if you want to buy a winner, your chances are so much higher from a proven female family. And now sport horse buyers are coming to the same realisation.

Overfeeding -The end of sound warmbloods?

Urban Perceptions
I am really amazed, fascinated and mostly amused at how artifical the “city” dwellers have become. They expect their wives to be slim and trim and yet want their mares to be fat and overweight. Yes most times grossly overweight! They want their husbands to be trim and their stallions fat, yes very fat! They certainly dont want fat, podgy children and yet horribly overfeed their foals!

Broodmare Selection

Influences on Broodmare’s Selection
The breeder has influence and personal preferences when selecting a broodmare. Because of the rising costs of maintaining mares breeders are becoming more selective placing more emphasis on Quality than Quantity.

Should I Breed or Buy
Posted: Monday, January 15th, 2007
“Wise men stay only fools rush in”
There is an old English saying that goes “Fool’s breed for wise men to ride!”
The Sport Horse breeding industry has reached the proportion now in South Africa that a significant amount of horses are being purpose bred for the disciplines of Show jumping, Dressage and Eventing.

The old man is back
The German instructor, Christine Fiege has been riding Peter Pan D in the dressage arena since late 2006. What makes this so special is that Peter Pan was brought out of retirement after 4 years for her to compete. At 17 years young he is doing her and the Davenport Stud very proud!

Post Derby Results.
Posted: Monday, October 30th, 2006
This show was previously known as the Post-Derby Show. It has always been held after the main Derby to give the young horses a chance to compete in the Bob Charter Arena and become acquainted with the derby obstacles. This year Anne-Marie Esslinger designed the courses. They were very fair and encouraging for the younger horses.

Clever Breeding
Posted: Friday, September 8th, 2006
“I love to tell the success story of Ernie Davenport”, I found an interesting article on Epets.co.za today, about what Rogan Asken has to say about our breeding technique. An portion of the interview follows:
Epets.co.za: “WHAT IS THE WORLDWIDE TREND IN BREEDING?”
Rogan Asken: “The whole Australian Olympic Event team was mounted on Thoroughbreds, but that is where it ended. All the other top horses were Warmbloods, and in South Africa we are following this trend.
